JERUSALEM, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Euroleague basketball game between Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv and Turkish champions Anadolu Efes, scheduled for Thursday evening in Tel Aviv, has been postponed due to an ongoing ban on flights to and from Israel, the Israeli club said on Tuesday.

The Turkish team could have requested an exceptional permit to arrive with an Israeli charter flight, but because Israeli airlines do not land in Turkey, this option was not possible, Maccabi said in its statement.

Additionally, as part of the sky closure in Israel, all charter flights of foreign airlines are not allowed to land in the country.

The ban took effect on Tuesday, following a decision by the Israeli cabinet, and is expected to continue at least until Sunday.

The cabinet decision was made to prevent the arrival and spread of new COVID-19 variants in Israel.

The Euroleague Basketball organization says it will coordinate with the teams to find the best options to reschedule the game.

It noted that in accordance with the special COVID-19 regulations, each game can be rescheduled or relocated up to three times, if there are available dates.
